Canelo Watched the Crawford Loss Five Times — He Wants the Rematch, But Mbilli Comes First

Most fighters bury the tape of the worst night of their career. Canelo Alvarez has watched his five times.

In a new Ring Magazine interview with Mike Coppinger, recorded in Spain, the 36-year-old Mexican star said he knows exactly what went wrong when Terence Crawford took his undisputed super-middleweight crown by unanimous decision in September 2025 — the cards were close, 116-112 and a pair of 115-113s — and that his track record in rematches is why he believes a second fight goes differently. He pointed to the Golovkin series as the template: adjust, come back, win.

There’s one problem, and Canelo owned it himself: there is no rematch clause. His team never put one in the Crawford contract, a mistake he has admitted more than once. Crawford, who retired in December, owes him nothing on paper. If the rematch ever happens, it happens because Crawford decides to come back — and Canelo can only make that call harder to refuse by winning, loudly, in the meantime.

Which brings us to October 31 in Riyadh. Canelo challenges Christian Mbilli, the undefeated WBC super-middleweight champion who was elevated to full champion after Crawford retired. Mbilli is no placeholder opponent. He’s an aggressive, high-volume pressure fighter, and Canelo himself talked the matchup up as the kind of styles clash that can produce a fight of the year. At 36, coming off elbow surgery and a year out, Canelo is walking into a genuinely dangerous comeback fight — the kind a fighter takes when he’s standing on business instead of protecting what’s left of a name.

That’s the part of this story worth respecting. Canelo could have spent this chapter calling out retired men and selling nostalgia. Instead he’s fighting a hungry, unbeaten champion in his prime, on the road, with everything to lose. Beat Mbilli and take the WBC belt, and the Crawford conversation changes from wishful thinking to unfinished business the sport will demand. Lose, and the rematch talk dies in Riyadh with everything else.

First things first. October 31. A champion who throws a lot of punches against a legend who has watched the film five times and thinks he has the answers. We’ll see.
