No War This Time: Dubois Destroys Wardley in Two Rounds to Keep the WBO Crown

The first fight was a war for the ages. The rematch was a warning.

Daniel Dubois retained his WBO heavyweight title Saturday night at The O2 Arena in London, stopping Fabio Wardley at 2:21 of the second round on DAZN PPV — and “stopping” undersells it. In May, in Manchester, Wardley dropped Dubois twice in the opening rounds and it took the Londoner eleven brutal rounds to rip the title away. This time there was no comeback story, no deep water, no drama. There was just a levels difference, written in right hands.

It started before most of the crowd had settled. Roughly fifteen seconds in, Dubois detonated an overhand right and Wardley’s legs were gone — down for a count inside the first twenty seconds of the fight. Wardley, all heart as always, climbed up and somehow survived the round, but he took a further pounding against the ropes late in the first and was saved by the bell, a man being held together by pride.

Their first fight went eleven rounds of this:

Round two brought no mercy and no adjustments that mattered. Dubois walked him down behind that right hand, one clean shot after another, and Wardley’s corner had seen enough — the towel came in, referee Steve Gray waved it off, and the O2 knew it had witnessed a settling, not a contest. Dubois moves to 24-3 with 23 knockouts; Wardley falls to 20-2-1, both defeats to the same man. “Fabio is a great warrior,” Dubois said afterward, “but this is my time, my era. I had bad intentions from the beginning.” Believe him.

So what now? The heavyweight picture cleared up in a hurry. IBF champion Filip Hrgovic was ringside, and he wants the rematch — Dubois stopped him in Riyadh in 2024, and two belts on the line makes it a unification, even if a mandatory likely comes first for Hrgovic. Promoter Frank Warren is already talking about working toward an undisputed heavyweight champion in 2027. On Saturday’s evidence, Dubois isn’t a placeholder in that conversation. He’s the problem everybody else has to solve.
