“I Accept — in Texas”: Schofield Answers Mason’s Call-Out, and the Contract Is Still the Fight

Read the headline, then watch the clips — because on this one, the distance between the two is the story. AKHi TV’s title says Abdullah Mason and Floyd Schofield agree to fight next and unify the lightweight titles. The video itself, which is stitched clips with no narration at all, shows something narrower and, frankly, more believable: a champion saying yes — with his terms attached, and no contract anywhere in sight.

The yes belongs to Schofield. In the opening clip, the newly crowned WBA champion — the only belt named for either man anywhere in this video — says he saw Mason’s call-out and answers it directly: “I accept the challenge.” Then come the terms, and he calls them his only terms: the fight happens in Austin or San Antonio, Texas. J. Prince has his father’s number. Send a contract. His proposed timing in that clip: February or March of next year. In a second clip he repeats the acceptance and then adds the line that keeps this honest: “We’ll see if they accept it” — his camp will get with Golden Boy, and if Oscar doesn’t want it, there are other names.

The Mason side of the video is a phone call, and it proves less than the thumbnail wants. Mason is on camera, voices overlap, and the one clean line — “It’s a green light on our end” — cannot be safely pinned on Mason himself. What the segment does show is a promoter call still waiting to be made, and somebody hoping the other side doesn’t duck the call. Mason’s own solo yes is never in this video. That matters, and we’re not going to paper over it.

Schofield Sr. closes the loop the way he always does — loudly, and with the paperwork named. If Mason wants it, they can run it next; January or February, he says, a month or two earlier than his son’s own proposal. “Send the contracts to Golden Boy.” And then the sentence that defines where this fight actually stands: “We waiting for the contract.” Two belts on the line, Sr. says — though the video never names Mason’s belt — and the figures need to come with the paperwork. Sr. also fires a warning across the street: the only fight his camp will take over there is Shakur Stevenson, in Texas, not Saudi Arabia.

So here is the accurate version, and it is still a good story for the division: the WBA champion answered a call-out on camera, named his cities, named his months, and named the desk the contract goes to. In a lightweight landscape built on leaked sparring and lawyer emails, a public yes with public terms is real progress. But a yes is not a signature, and Texas-only is a condition, not a detail. The ball is exactly where Sr. put it — in a contract that, as of these clips, does not exist.
