When a Brooklyn legend talks, the boxing world listens. Zab Judah — former undisputed welterweight champion, one of the most gifted fighters of his era — has weighed in on Floyd Schofield Jr.’s WBA title win over Lucas Bahdi, and the Shakur Stevenson and Abdullah Mason callouts swirling around the new champion.
Judah knows exactly what Schofield just went through. Judah’s own career was built on electric talent tested in firefights, and he recognizes the real thing when he sees it. Schofield didn’t just win a belt against Bahdi — he got hurt, showed championship resolve, and closed the show over twelve rounds. That’s the kind of win that tells veterans everything they need to know about a young fighter. Judah’s reaction carries that weight: this wasn’t a coronation, it was an education, and Kid Austin passed.
Then there’s the fallout — and it’s loud. Shakur Stevenson and Abdullah Mason both have Schofield’s name in their mouths after the Bahdi win. The callouts are flying. And the Schofield camp, true to form, isn’t backing down from any of it. Sr. already made the family’s position clear: everybody can get it.
Here’s the thing Judah understands that the callout artists sometimes forget: there’s a difference between calling out a champion and being ready for one. Schofield just proved he can take a punch from a puncher and still execute down the stretch. That’s not a prospect anymore — that’s a champion with scar tissue and a belt, the most dangerous combination in boxing.
The lightweight division is officially on notice. A new WBA champion who takes all comers, a line of challengers forming, and the old guard watching closely. Judah’s seen generations of lightweights come and go. His interest in this one says plenty.
Schofield wanted the big stage. He’s got it now — and everybody wants a piece of him. That’s the price of the crown, and Kid Austin looks ready to make them all pay it.
